5 Ways to Experience God Today

It’s easy to search Google and get answers to your hardest questions. The crazy part is, we actually believe most of what we read on the internet especially if it’s one of the top five hits on our Google search.

Experiencing God and His power is more than what a search engine can offer. It has little to do with SEO and more to do with the soul.

Read His Word.

We all know we should read the Bible, but when life gets busy, it’s one of the first things to go. The older I get, the more I am learning the value of God’s Word. It’s not just a quick fix in the morning or a verse of the day that keeps the devil away. It’s the bread of life for my soul. When I don’t open it, I am parched. Like a starving child, I get angry and cranky. I begin to think I know what’s best for me and I stomp my feet like a toddler who needs a nap. Oh how I need God’s Word every day. It’s water when I’m thirsty. It’s bread when I’m hungry. It’s light when life feels dark. It’s comfort when I’m afraid. It’s security when I’m insecure. It’s hope when I’m hurting. Within the pages of scripture, God offers me everything I need. When I open and feast on the words He gives me, my soul is filled with exactly what it needs.

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:10-11

Ask God to reveal Himself to you.

It may sound a bit mystical to you when I say, “Ask God to reveal Himself.” But I have learned that when I ask God this question, He proves Himself to me in amazing ways. He gives me literal proof of His presence with me through answered prayers, perfectly timed encouragement, and daily comfort. You can have that too! Simply ask Him.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Matthew 7:7

Pray the Psalms out loud.

It’s easy to think our prayers and never really say them out loud. But there is something about speaking the words of Scripture. I love the Psalms because so often David relates with our heart’s cry for deliverance and help. Open your Bible to the Psalms and choose one to pray aloud. You’ll be amazed at how God uses simple words to reveal His presence to you.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.
There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.
The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.
He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Psalm 46

Ask for wisdom.

This sounds too simple, doesn’t it? But James gives us the clue to finding wisdom. It’s simply asking God for it. So often we wrestle with what we should do. We wonder why God is not giving us answers and where to move on from this point. But God gives wisdom to those who seek and ask for it. Sometimes rather than wrestling with the unknowns, we simply need to accept the wisdom God freely gives us in His Word.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:5

Offer worship.

Worship. It’s one of those words that sounds a bit cultural. To some, it’s music. To others, it’s quiet. It might mean hands raised to you, or head bowed. Perhaps real worship to you is on bended knee or chanting a familiar chorus. But to me worship is simply acknowledging the power of God in my life. It’s telling God, “I see you! I know you are with me! I trust you! You are my Father! You comfort me! You amaze me! I’m in awe of you! I can’t live without you! You lead me! Guide me, Lord! Show me more of your power!”

Worship isn’t an event or a place or a practice. It is the action of believing God is who He says He is, and responding in our rightful place at the feet of Jesus.

For each of us, it might look different, but the result is often the same. When I worship, I experience the power of God no matter how hard life might be.

If you’ve wondered what it must be like to experience God and really get a glimpse of His power, I hope this has given you a little of the inside scoop. It’s not a mystical practice or something you might attain someday. It’s freely offered right now to all who seek God.

Love & Blessings,

  1. Several years ago there was a song, “Shut Up and Drive”. Can’t remember most of the lyrics, but sometimes I think that’s exactly what God is telling me to do. Stop trying to figure things out, and keep moving forward. After all, it’s nearly impossible to hear Him with a noisy soul.

  2. Great steps, Micah! I get cranky when I’m hungry from lack of His Word in my life too!

I wanted to let you know you’re nominated for a blogging award. Congratulations! The details, if you want to participate, are in this link: http://firstandsecondblog.com/read/
