ABC Thanksgiving Prayer

It’s easy to be thankful when life looks good and things are going smoothly. We often like to say we are “blessed” in those moments. When crisis hits or relationships crumble it’s much harder to offer up praise and thanksgiving. The blessings we experience in the good old days quickly become a faint memory of God’s grace and we tend to focus on the problem in front of us. We know the right things to say in these seasons:

Keep your chin up.
This won’t last forever.
God is good all the time.

These things aren’t bad to say. I say these things to myself often, but what if there was a better way to say thank you in the midst of a life that isn’t wrapped up in a pretty package with a glittery bow on top?

As I began to count my blessings and thank the Lord for the way He provides my needs, He began to work in my heart and prompted me to change the way I tell Him, “Thank You”.

Rather than thanking Him for what He can do for me, I began praising Him for who He is with me.

My prayer of thanksgiving changed from “Thank you Lord for this and that,” to something much more focused. This prayer of thanksgiving will be something I will go back to again and again, and I hope you will too!

Give us eyes to see that you are more than the hard circumstances we face, more than the troubled times we trudge through, and more than the mundane mayhem of another day, another week, and another month.

We thank you Lord for all that you are! You are God and we praise your Holy Name!

Happy Thanksgiving!
