When Christmas Makes You CRAZY

Stress-Its-been-lovely-screamWith the hustle and bustle of shopping, wrapping gifts, decorating, church programs, parties and family gatherings, it is easy to get in a tizzy over things that don’t really matter.  While these traditions hold a special place in our Christmas memories, I encourage you to consider what really lasts for eternity.  I love to decorate, go to parties, enjoy the events and not miss a thing.  I often get crazy when I try to do it all, especially this time of year.  Just a glance at the calendar may make you feel like you have to fight off a panic attack.  If you feel a little crazy, stretched too thin, or just need to regroup, I hope these simple thoughts will be an encouragement to you:

1. Focus on his gift.  By making Jesus the center of my thoughts and events the problems that come up are minimized by his amazing gift of everlasting life.  His gift overshadows the mistakes in the school play or church program, and make the party and gifts that I spent days agonizing over seem so silly.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  John 3:16

2. Focus on his love.  If this time of year brings loneliness or sadness, focussing on God’s love can bring immeasurable comfort and make the difficult days a little easier to get through.  His love for me reminds me that I have access to his strength, love and peace.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.  Galatians 2:20

Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.  And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.  I John 4:15-16

3. Focus on his power.  When we focus on the amazing power of Jesus, the things that cause us to hustle and bustle are minimized.  Don’t get crazy over gatherings, programs and gifts.  Make Jesus the center of each thing and he will bring the joy and peace that you long for.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

If you are feeling stressed or strained over all you have to do this month, take a deep breath and focus on the only thing that truly matters, JESUS.  Re-evaluate your to do list and start on the path to a calmer Christmas.

Silent night, holy night.  All is calm, all is bright.
