Is God’s Power for Me?

When I didn’t make the cut, I thought surely God must have completely forgotten I wanted the part in the first place. I thought this was finally my chance to shine for Him, but the rejection of the chorus leader was proof that I didn’t have what it takes.

I wondered why God led me to try out in the first place. I questioned why I ever had that desire in my heart at all. I thought God had turned His back on me and left me to dry my own tears with my own trembling hands.

There I stood, rejected by man, overlooked by God, and discouraged from the tips of my toes to the top of my head.

I walked back to my dorm room fighting back the tears refusing to even acknowledge God.

He had saved His blessing, His abundant calling, and His power for someone else.

Maybe it’s not a juvenile tryout or audition that has given you the feeling of being overlooked or underappreciated, but my guess is you’ve probably wondered a time or two why other people seem to be blessed with God’s power and sometimes His power seems lacking in your own life.

We all want to experience more of Him, and yet so often we are looking in all the wrong places. We want to succeed, to gain peace, to accomplish real rest, to simplify our lives, or climb the ladder to new heights, and yet, we wonder why we aren’t experiencing God’s power like others who are seeking the same things we are.

It’s not the seeking that is the problem. And it’s not our problems that cause the disconnect. It’s more about the striving, the strain, the superficial desire to be more, achieve more, and gain acceptance more.

We live in a recognition-driven culture. Everything we do is driven by a thumbs up or the click of a heart that says, “I approve of you.”

All the while, God is waiting for us to look to Him with our hands up and our hearts open without the grasp of the cell phone hindering our communication with Him.

We wonder why we aren’t experiencing more of Him but we never give Him a chance to speak outside of the technology we cling to in our hands.

God’s power isn’t reserved for others, and it’s not held captive because He doesn’t love you. God’s power is available and accessible right now. You can reach God and you can listen to Him today.

Too often we think we need to climb higher, or get the next big gig to prove that God is in our midst, but we miss the beauty of His presence right now.

He is with us!

Just listen. Be still. Put down the phone. Turn off the noise. Stop looking at what everyone else is doing and achieving and trying. And gaze at and grasp hold of Jesus.

If I could go back to that dorm room of a rejected college girl, I would kneel down, look deep into her eyes, grab hold of her hands and tell her this:

God has not overlooked you.
He is saving you for something better.
His plans are bigger than the part you wanted.
He is in control of things we cannot see.
He is not keeping you from something; He is keeping you for something so amazing. You may never truly grasp all He is up to. So lift your chin, dry your tears, and listen. He is speaking right now in the silence of your pain. And He loves you.

I don’t know what God is keeping you for right now, but I do know this – your problems aren’t something God is causing to happen to you. He is allowing them, to do His work through you.

God’s power is available. Right now, wherever you are in this life, God is there too.
